You may be wondering where AI fits into your municipality or organization.  The prevailing sentiment is that if you don’t adopt AI now, you will be left behind.

Try the new Alberta MGA Assistant

An MNP survey of 282 municipal leaders in March 2025 indicated that 23% of municipalities are already using AI in some capacity while another 21% plan to introduce AI tools in the near future.  Of those using AI, 55% are using it to augment customer service.  A good example of this is Kelowna’s Smart and Intelligent City Initiative which amongst other initiatives, uses chatbots for residents to find answers online.

Implementing AI in a municipality or any other organization will only find success if it is part of a larger initiative.  The Project Management Institute indicates that 80% of the work to get an AI project off the ground is in setting up the background data.  In other words, a cohesive plan that defines what the goals of AI in a municipality are and what resources are required to deliver those goals are the critical success factor.

At Smart Towns, we wanted to provide an example of what AI might look like.  Introducing the new Alberta MGA Assistant.   Just ask in plain language, a question of the Alberta Municipal Government Act and it will provide an answer and where to find it in the document.  Let us know what you think!
